AVERY HILL

This superfun project is currently underway with several phases still to be rolled out over the next few months.

The Avery Hill Edible Garden is one of the main campuses of The University of Greenwich. It was started in 2012 and has continued to grow ever since. It is run by staff, students and community members and is always open to anyone who wants to get involved and volunteer.

Our job has been to design a map, signage for all areas of the garden, build a giant compost bay that can accommodate the large amount of garden waste produced by the land and create seating space for visitors, volunteers and students so that they can enjoy the view and nature in peace and quiet.

Keeping sustainability at the forefront of our projects we gathered resources from the plot itself. We managed to save a large amount of slate which we have been testing in our laser cutters to create bespoke signage in certain areas, while we repurposed leftover valchromat blocks from our WREN 300 project for the plant signage.

As we wanted all the wood elements to have an extra-long life span, we applied

a Japanese wood charring technique ( Shou Sugi Ban ) before assembling the compost bay and the benches.

For the benches we used recycled and subsequently flame - treated wood palettes and leftover sleepers from previous gardening projects to keep the cost low.

As the space is frequently visited by kindergarten groups and nurseries we selected a number of logs from around the forest path and began turning them into characters from the garden such as hedgehog, fox, owl and more to make the kids' experience a bit more fun as well.

We will have a lot more photos once the project is completed, stay tuned :)
